What happens when “Nurse Wellness” (that’s me) has to have knee surgery for a torn meniscus at age 66 and never has had surgery before? Let’s analyze this.
Hooray for Healthy Aging
Can we have applause for a woman my age who is healthy enough to avoid surgery, hospitalization and meds after all these years? Yes it can be done, and since my entire career has been devoted to wellness and living a healthy lifestyle, the payoff is feeling great, no healthcare expenses (except for the ridiculously high premiums I can’t avoid) and motivation to keep on living long after 100.
Hooray for Healthy Joints
Secondly, why did I have a torn meniscus without having an injury or being a competitive athlete? Guess that means the body does succumb to wear and tear after 66 years of being active with exercise, twisting, sitting on my feet with tightly bent knees since I was a kid (Japanese style) and other seemingly benign events that lead to gradual deterioration. I was shocked that this could happen to me, but now appreciate even more the ability of the joints to keep on going for 66 years before the start to show wear. And of course thank me for being smart enough to take high quality nutritionals and glucosamine to keep them as healthy as they can be. www.carolebert.usana.com
Hooray for Quality Healthcare
I’m fortunate to live where there is readily accessible quality healthcare with no waiting. Having begun my career as a nurse, but shifting into prevention where I felt I could do more good, I know how the system works including its flaws and strengths. In my case, all I experienced was the strengths which was very reassuring. And even though I am often frustrated with this money-hungry system, when it comes to alleviating pain with a simple procedure, I am totally supportive of what they can do.
Hooray for Rapid Recovery After Surgery
After my first and only surgery — and it was all done in one day, I was pleasantly surprised that I had no anesthesia hangover and no post-op pain. How is that possible? As they wheeled my out to my car, the nurses at the nurse’s station (whom know me) said “you don’t even look like you had surgery today”. Another reason why living a healthy lifestyle really pays off! Plus when I went home, I was awake, alert and ate a big meal. No surgery residual for me!
So my words of wisdom are to keep on doing healthy things and if you have fallen off the wagon, get right back on. The rewards are amazing! And if you have a torn meniscus, may it be a miniscule one.
Be well on YOUR wellness journey.
