First – let’s deal with this denial thing and face the facts about growing older. Boomers want to live forever don’t they? And one key thing I know for sure if you want to live forever, you need to make a commitment to your health – whether it is excellent, average, or not so good, it all matters and it becomes the starting point.
The good news is that Wellness has come of age just in time for our retirement years. Breakthroughs have occurred which have allowed us to think we really could live forever! It is never too late to experience Extreme Wellness – to turn over a new leaf, to turn back the clock, and forge ahead toward a state of wellness, not illness. Allow me to share my experiences and why I believe this turnaround is possible.
Obesity and Diabetes was prevalent in my family
I grew up in a household and extended family of overweight people with chronic diseases like Diabetes, High Blood Pressure, Heart Disease and Strokes, and odds are I should be unhealthy as well. But I’m not. Sure I could have fallen into the trap of giving in, blaming my genes and saying I can’t be healthy – my whole family is unhealthy – I can’t control it – I inherited the traits. But all those excuses are bogus. When I really took a look at what was going on, I saw unhealthy lifestyle choices of over eating, indulging in too many sweets and high fat foods, lots of sitting, talking, eating and no regular exercise. And I was going down the same path.
My training as a nurse was my wake-up call
Once I became a nurse, I quickly discovered that the work of caring for patients was not making an impact on keeping them healthy. All I was doing was treating symptoms and problems after they had manifested. It started to make more sense to me that I could serve people better if I moved into the arena of wellness and prevention.
At about that time, I shifted into the role of School Nurse and started teaching kids how to be well. It was so much more rewarding to impact the health of kids in a positive way, that I sought more training in prevention and became a Health Educator. And of course it rubbed off on my lifestyle choices as I became a regular exerciser, started paying attention to eating healthy and effectively managing my stress level.
I discovered Wellness was the magic bullet
Well guess what, I trimmed down a bit, got more energy and felt a whole lot better. I realized that my genes were not at fault in my family after all. The lifestyle choices my relatives made were at fault. And I was living proof that I could break the cycle of obesity and chronic disease that was plaguing my family. I had discovered the “magic bullet” of keeping me well – forever. It was WELLNESS and I have been living it, learning it, teaching it, sharing it, coaching others on it for most of my career. Life is great when you adopt a wellness lifestyle, and you can jump on board too!
So my intention now is to bring the wellness message to my Boomer Peers who may need a tune-up to carry them through the next half of life. Remember, it’s never to late to turn back the clock and reverse chronic disease. Here are some great new benefits brought to you by the wonderful world of Wellness.
